THE START...
LAX 4 LIFE, INC. is a national lacrosse campaign to provide and support programs geared toward adolescent and young adult suicide prevention awareness.
In the spring of 2009, an idea was brought to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Women's Lacrosse Coaches by Ginny Martino (Head coach West Chester University). That idea was to tackle an issue college coaches, teams and communities deal with everyday...adolescent suicide and life after suicide. During the 2009 season, 10 teams across the state of Pennsylvania participated in games and raised funds for the Allyson Rose Green Memorial Foundation (www.allysonsfund.org); a foundation started after the younger sister of a West Chester University player committed suicide at the age of 16. As a result LAX-4-LIFE was born.
After seeing the response from their campuses and communities alike, those involved with LAX-4-LIFE felt more could be done and a greater impact could be made. In the spring of 2010 LAX-4-LIFE was offered throughout NCAA Division II women's lacrosse. Over 2/3 of teams participated in close to 50 designated games throughout the season. As a result over 1,000 t-shirts were sold. These profits along with donations collected during the games resulted in $17,000 being raised for the Allyson Rose Green Foundation.
In 2011, LAX-4-LIFE games took place in Division I, Division II and Division III, during the last week of March and the first week of April. With the support and involvement over 63 Division I, II and III teams, LAX-4-LIFE will be able to make its largest contribution so far.
In addition, LAX-4-LIFE was joined by high school games in Cold Spring Harbor, NY, Central Dauphin, PA, and Brighton, MI. LAX-4-LIFE was at the IWLCA Capital Cup and made its first appearance at the US Lacrosse Convention in January 2012.
In the spring of 2012 we had over 40 college teams across all Divisions and parts of the country. LAX-4-LIFE was also the chosen foundation for the Nassau County (NY) coaches association for the 2012 campaign. Multiple schools on Long Island held games in support of suicide prevention awareness.
The 2013 campaign bolstered 35 colleges across the country, 15 high schools and 3 middle schools across southern PA, all playing LAX-4-LIFE games to raise awareness for suicide prevention awareness!
2014-15 season showcased the involvement over over 50 college programs as well as 30 High School teams! All holding numerous LAX-4-LIFE games!
